The Pirate’s Daughter

This book is the real deal!

After a long career on the silver screen, Errol Flynn spent much of the last years of his life on a small island off of Jamaica, throwing parties and sleeping with increasingly younger teenaged girls. Based on those years, The Pirate’s Daughter is the story of Ida, a local girl who has an affair with Flynn that produces a daughter, May, who meets her father but once.

Spanning two generations of women whose destinies become inextricably linked with the matinee idol’s, this lively novel tells the provocative history of a vanished era, of uncommon kinships, betrayal and atonement in a tropical setting.  As adept with Jamaican vernacular as she is at revealing the internal machinations of a fading and bloated matinee idol, Margaret Cezair-Thompson weaves a saga of a mother and daughter finding their way in a nation struggling to rise to the challenge of independence.

You will never need to read another book after you feast on this scrumptious tale.

Gone Baby Gone

Whew! This movie takes you for a ride.  I missed it at the movie theater and couldn’t wait for it to come out on video.  It started out a bit slow and typical, but about half way through it starts to take turns that are as eqaully shocking as they are shameful. Just when I thought I had it figured out it would take yet another turn.

The backdrop of the movie was scarily authentic.  The home of the characters were as nasty and dirty as a crack house.

This movie was directed by Ben Afleck and starred his younger brother Casey. With Ben’s most recent acting roles one would be hesitant to trust his ability to bring true grit and drama.  Fear not – this movis is excellent!

Grammy Awards

This year the Grammys turned 50! I expected a fabulous party to celebrate, but got something just short of boring. The Grammy Show has joined the list of awards shows that have taken a departure from focusing on the award winners to a performance showcase.  This new direction would be great if the performances were hot!?!?!

There were some shinning moments throughout the evening.  The wonderful Alicia Keys always delivers.  Her performance with John Mayer sizzled.  The Cirque du Soleil – The Beatles LOVE was daring and heart felt.  Tina Turner has found the fountain of youth.  Her duet with Beyonce was good -not great.  I would be remiss if I did not mention Amy Winehouse.  Amy did her thing! As only she can.

Project Runway

Project Runway is my all time favorite Reality TV show! And believe me I’ve seen them all.  The creativity that’s displayed on a weekly basis is incredible.  The aspiring designers are put to the test every week with a seemingly daunting challenge to create a runway ready outfit.  Each week I’m amazed at the designer’s ability to deliver.  The most amazing challenge this season was when the designers had to make an outfit out of Hershey’s candy paper!

The show is well produced with credible judges; great exposure and worthwhile prizes.

Psych

A new quick-witted drama, Psych stars James Roday as young police consultant Shawn Spencer who solves crimes with powers of observation so acute the precinct detectives think he’s psychic — at least that’s what he lets them believe. :)Psych also stars Dule Hill as Shawn’s best friend and reluctant sidekick, Gus.  I love Gus! He is so incredibly adorable.  Steve Franks, the show’s writer, has done a fantastic job developing his character. He is quirky, intelligent, handsome and the first nerd I’ve ever been attracted to.

Psych is cleverly written with an eccentric cast.  It can be seen on Fridays at 10:00 pm on USA.

Sleeping on Natasha!

I fell in love with the song Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield.  It’s on my voice mail, ringtone, and my myspace site.  I had to find out more about this new artist with the mysterious and pure voice, because I’ve clearly been sleeping.  I found out that Natasha released her debut album also titled Unwritten back in 2004 in the UK! The entire album is motivating and down to earth; each song was written and performed with clear abandon.

Natasha is an English singer with a hip and fresh style.  I like her! Her sophomore CD Pocketful of Sunshine was released last Tuesday.  I can’t wait to get it!

Moment Of Truth

After watching the first 15 min of this new reality show, I started singing You Want To Be Starting Something by Micheal Jackson! This show is guaranteed to send some folks to Divorce Court.

This new FOX  program puts participants to the test — the lie detector test — to reveal whether or not they are telling the truth for a chance to win half a million dollars. The challenge is simple: tell the truth! This one time when fast money isn’t worth it to me.  I simply could not put myself out there like some of these folks.  Uh, not that I have anything to hide, but I’m just saying.

I think this is a brilliant concept and it’s guaranteed to be a hit!

I have it give it 41/2 kisses out of five!
